A. Christian attended church as a child, but stopped when he and his parents moved to California. He witnessed the hypocrisy of his parents claiming to be Christians, yet their words and actions declaring them liars. The witness of his family drove him away from Christ, and as a teen he rejected all religion.
He yearned for purpose in his life, and looked to involvement in politics and government to find that purpose. As a teen, he was involved in school government and leadership, even attending a national young leaders' conference in our nation's capitol. During college he served as an intern with the Republican Caucus in the state Senate, where he mostly served as a staff writer, condensing daily news and writing opinion pieces, for a daily briefing of Republican legislators. He was actively involved with former Nixon aide Bruce Herschennsohn's 1992 US Senate bid, and was promised a job in DC if Herschennsohn were to win.
His career in politics and government, however, was one false start after another. In politics, you usually have to "pay your dues" working for free before you get a paid job. He interned in the legislature at a time of sharp staff cuts, and was never offered paid work there. Herschennsohn's campaign manager for the northern part of the state offered him a field office manager position in the campaign, but withdrew the offer a day later when someone with more experience became available. Herschennsohn narrowly lost the election to Barbara Boxer. Christian was hired as Public Relations Director of a group intending to lobby Congress for Social Security reform, but soon after relocating he discovered the group's founders were unwilling to accept crucial strategic counsel, and were unable to pay him as promised.
It was during this time that God got ahold of A. Christian's life. The night he received salvation, he prayed to not be a "mediocre Christian", and to genuinely allow God to be the Lord of his life. God quickly began stripping away sin, and first on the list was A. Christian's arrogance. Christian often says he was the most arrogant person he's known in his life. Well he quickly found himself humbled. For someone who thinks he's better than other people to suddenly find himself working as a pizza boy is a great lesson in humility, and that's exactly what God gave him. That is why he uses the name A. Christian instead of his real name. He is simply a Christian who wants the attention and glory to go to God instead of himself.
Christian spent a couple more months attempting to find work in politics and government, but God shut every door. Herschennsohn put him in contact with a famous think tank, and they wanted to hire him as a freelance writer, but he had no background in the topic they wanted him to write about. Local party bosses recommended him to be campaign manager for a state legislature candidate, but the timing wasn't right.
Finally, Christian cried out to God and said, "fine Lord, if you don't want me to work in politics and government, I don't care. Show me what You want." Two days later he had a job offer in industry. He walked away from politics and government that day, and never looked back. In the twelve years since then, he has served on the foreign mission field, has worked in education, and has served in the local church.
He had left politics behind, and only paid enough attention to make informed voting choices. It is what he needed as a baby Christian. However, while watching David Barton's videos on satellite on July 4th, 2004, he sensed God convicting him of his neglect, of his sin. He also sensed God was calling him to proclaim the message of Please Persecute Me. It is that message he passionately brings you today.
